Hurghada Youth Film Festival Presents “The Challenge,” the First Feature Film Shot in Outer Space
The Hurghada Youth Film Festival, in cooperation with the Russian Cultural Center, will host a special screening of “The Challenge,” the groundbreaking Russian feature that became the first narrative film to shoot real scenes aboard the International Space Station. The event highlights one of the most remarkable achievements in modern filmmaking.
The Hurghada Youth Film Festival, in partnership with the Russian Cultural Center, will present a special screening of “The Challenge” (Вызов) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the Russian Cultural Center in Dokki.
Released in 2023, the film made cinematic history as the first feature-length movie to film actual scenes aboard the International Space Station (ISS) rather than recreating space environments in studios.
Directed by Klim Shipenko and starring Yulia Peresild and Miloš Biković, the production combined filmmaking with a real space mission.
On October 5, 2021, actress Yulia Peresild, director Klim Shipenko, and cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov launched into space, spending 12 days aboard the ISS to film key scenes in real microgravity conditions.
The story follows Dr. Zhenya, a skilled surgeon who has just one month to prepare for an emergency mission to the International Space Station, where she must perform a life-saving operation on an injured astronaut under zero-gravity conditions.
The film received three awards at the second Hurghada Youth Film Festival, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress, further cementing its status as one of the most innovative cinematic projects in recent years.
Presented in Russian with both Arabic and English subtitles, the screening offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience a landmark achievement in the history of international cinema.
