A Deadly Drug on the Market! Children's Deaths Expose Corruption in India's Pharmaceutical Industry
Widespread investigations into Indian pharmaceutical factories after children died from a toxic cough syrup containing deadly substances exceeding the legal limit by 500 times.
Indian pharmaceutical companies are facing increased scrutiny following the recent deaths of children who consumed a toxic cough syrup, reigniting global concerns over the safety of Indian-made medical products.
Health authorities reported that at least 17 children died last month after taking “Coldrif” syrup, which is locally manufactured by Srisan Pharmaceuticals. Tests revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol, a toxic substance, at levels over 500 times the permissible limit.
Although the product was not exported, the World Health Organization (WHO) has requested clarification from the Indian government to determine whether any batches were shipped abroad. The WHO stated it is assessing whether to issue a global medical product alert once it receives official confirmation from New Delhi. The organization also reiterated its advice against the use of cough and cold medications in children.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Health has launched surprise inspections at 19 manufacturing units across six different states as part of its efforts to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
Among the companies inspected were Ship Pharma and Rednex Pharmaceuticals, both based in Gujarat, one of India’s key pharmaceutical hubs. Authorities reported that samples from both companies’ products failed to meet regulatory standards. Unspecified manufacturing deficiencies were also detected, prompting an immediate suspension of their production and distribution activities.
Gujarat’s Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, confirmed that additional samples from both companies have been collected and sent to government labs for further testing.
These measures follow a string of tragic incidents in recent years. Since 2022, more than 140 children have died in countries including Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon after consuming Indian-manufactured cough syrups. In response, the Indian government tightened export regulations and, since 2023, has required pharmaceutical companies to conduct stricter testing on both raw materials and final products.
