Study Reveals: Tea Supports Women’s Bone Health While Excessive Coffee Raises Fracture Risk

Researchers have found that everyday beverage choices may significantly influence bone health in women, particularly as they age. A recent study revealed that regular tea consumption may help reduce the risk of hip fractures, while excessive coffee intake could increase that risk.

The study analyzed data collected over a ten-year period, examining women’s tea and coffee drinking habits alongside detailed measurements of hip bone density, a key indicator of fracture susceptibility and overall bone strength.

Results showed that women who regularly drink tea tend to have slightly higher bone density than those who do not. Although the difference appears modest, researchers emphasized its statistical significance, noting that even small improvements in bone density can lead to a meaningful reduction in fracture rates across large populations.

In contrast, moderate coffee consumption of up to three cups per day showed no clear negative impact on bone health. However, drinking more than five cups daily was associated with lower bone mineral density and a higher likelihood of hip fractures.

Scientists suggest that caffeine may interfere with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, an essential nutrient for maintaining strong bones. While adding milk may help offset this effect, excessive coffee consumption can still pose a risk.

The findings do not call for eliminating coffee or increasing tea intake excessively, but rather emphasize moderation. Researchers conclude that for older women, a daily cup of tea could be a simple yet effective habit to support bone health, alongside regular exercise and adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
