First “AI-Assisted IVF Baby” Expected Soon in the U.S. After 15 Failed Fertility Cycles
Doctors at Columbia University predict the upcoming birth of the first U.S. baby conceived through AI-assisted IVF, following a successful pregnancy after 15 unsuccessful attempts.
In a medical breakthrough that feels like a step toward tomorrow, fertility specialists at Columbia University expect the imminent arrival of the first child in the United States conceived through artificial intelligence–assisted in vitro fertilization (AI IVF). The milestone follows a successful pregnancy achieved in March 2025 after the patient had endured 15 failed IVF cycles, according to recent reports.
The AI IVF process begins with hormonal injections administered by the patient to stimulate the ovaries for about two weeks, accompanied by routine blood tests and ultrasound scans to track follicle development. Once the eggs reach optimal maturity, they are retrieved under local anesthesia and sent to the laboratory, where artificial intelligence systems evaluate embryos, assess their quality, and predict which are most likely to result in a successful pregnancy.
Despite these advances, the success rate for embryo transfer remains around 50%, often requiring multiple attempts—an emotionally and financially burdensome journey for many patients. Currently, an estimated 2% of children in the U.S. are born through IVF, while around 10 million children worldwide have been conceived using these technologies since their introduction four decades ago.
Experts believe AI will usher in a transformative era for reproductive medicine, enhancing sperm analysis, embryo tracking, and overall decision-making to improve outcomes. Victoria S. Jiang, a reproductive endocrinologist at Shady Grove Fertility in Atlanta, describes AI’s role in fertility care as standing at a “pivotal moment,” poised to reshape reproductive health practices.
Still, many specialists urge caution, emphasizing the need for continued research to evaluate the boundaries, risks, and long-term implications of integrating artificial intelligence into reproductive technologies.
