Daily Weight-Loss Pills Approved by FDA in the United States
The FDA has approved the first oral GLP-1 weight-loss pill, containing semaglutide, shown to help patients lose up to 20% of body weight.
Daily weight-loss pills have received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after clinical trials demonstrated their ability to help patients shed up to 20% of body weight.
The pills, produced by Danish company Novo Nordisk under the brand name Wegovy, contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the popular weight-loss injections, now offered for the first time in oral form.
These pills are the first oral GLP-1 treatment approved by the FDA for obesity and overweight management. The medication is taken once daily, 25 mg in the morning on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
Data from the advanced Oasis-4 trial showed that patients taking the pills for 64 weeks lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight, compared to only 2.7% for those on a placebo, with about one-third of participants losing 20% or more.
The company stated that Wegovy pills achieve weight-loss results comparable to injections, providing a suitable alternative for those who prefer not to use needles, thereby expanding access to obesity treatments.
The new pills are expected to hit the U.S. market in early January 2026, with Novo Nordisk seeking similar regulatory approvals in Europe and other countries in the near future.
