Cuban health authorities have issued urgent warnings after 33 deaths were recorded in recent months due to mosquito-borne diseases, at a time when the country faces a widespread outbreak of viruses transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, placing unprecedented pressure on the healthcare system.

Causes of Death and Disease Spread

Deputy Minister of Health, Carelda Peña, reported that 12 deaths were due to dengue fever, while 21 were caused by chikungunya, with 21 victims under 18 years old. The outbreak has intensified this year, particularly with the rapid spread of chikungunya, previously rare in the island nation.

Economic Crisis Hampers Mosquito Control

Cuba's healthcare system struggles under the strain of a severe economic crisis, resulting in shortages of food, fuel, and medicines, which have hindered mosquito control efforts, including fumigation, waste cleanup, and water network repairs.

Major Outbreak Wave

Authorities recorded 5,717 new chikungunya cases in just one week, with actual numbers likely higher due to underreporting and reluctance to seek medical care. Havana and Santiago show the highest infection rates, prompting increasing warnings from health experts.

WHO Alerts

In July, the World Health Organization issued an urgent call for action, warning of the potential for a global outbreak similar to one nearly two decades ago, with viruses spreading from specific regions to Europe and the Americas.

Challenges in Controlling the Crisis

The lack of a specific treatment for chikungunya, which causes severe headaches, rashes, and long-lasting joint pain, complicates outbreak management, making preventive measures and health monitoring essential to protect the population.
