In one of the most shocking human trafficking cases, an appellate criminal court sentenced five defendants—including a couple, a broker, his son, and a housewife—to life imprisonment along with a fine of 500,000 EGP each for their involvement in the sale and purchase of a newborn baby in El Mahalla El Kubra, Gharbia Governorate.
How the Crime Began
Investigations revealed that a homeless couple entered into an informal marriage, and the woman became pregnant. During this time, another defendant was actively seeking to buy a baby, with the help of a broker and his son, agreeing on a deal worth 50,000 EGP after birth.
Dispute and Breakdown of the Deal
After the child was born, tensions escalated when the biological parents demanded a higher price of up to 500,000 EGP, which the buyer refused, leading to a breakdown of the agreement.
Kidnapping and Abandonment
The situation escalated into violence, with the child being forcibly taken from the parents’ shelter and handed over to the buyer. Later, the defendants abandoned the infant in a cardboard box near a mosque.
Discovery and Rescue
A worshipper found the abandoned baby and alerted authorities, who rescued the infant and reunited him with his mother after identification.
Court Verdict
The court found all defendants guilty of human trafficking and child abduction, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing heavy fines under anti-trafficking laws.
