Journalist Ahmad Shobeir commented on the upcoming coaching appointments at Al Ahly following the departure of Spanish coach Ribeiro, confirming that the club’s management has shortlisted key candidates for the head coach position.
Shobeir noted that Al Ahly intensified negotiations recently and finalized two main candidates: Jes Thorup, the Danish coach, and Jose Gomez, former Zamalek coach and current Al-Fateh manager, with Carlos Queiroz, Egypt’s former national team coach, ranking third.
He added that a senior official from Al Ahly held a Zoom session with Gomez, but Al-Fateh’s president insists on keeping him despite recent poor results, placing the Portuguese coach second after Thorup.
Shobeir highlighted that Mohamed Youssef, Al Ahly’s sports director, favored Turkish coach Fateh Terim, while Walid Salah El-Din preferred to wait until the next international break. The planning committee leaned toward Danish coach Thorup. The club will announce the new head coach within hours, with Adel Mostafa being the only existing staff member to remain.
He also noted that Amir Abdel Hamid will leave to join Egypt’s U-2009 national team, while Michel Yancun’s return as goalkeeping coach is unlikely due to the club’s plan to form a completely new technical staff. Emad El-Nahas will be offered multiple administrative roles within the club
