Electronic door systems are common in modern cars, but emergencies can occur where those systems fail. Below is a practical guide to the manual release methods on common Tesla models and how to use them safely and quickly.
General notes before you act
Stay calm and assess the situation: is the car on fire? Can someone open the door from outside? If the fire is intense, move away and wait for emergency responders.
It’s wise for every Tesla owner to carry basic emergency tools: a glass breaker to shatter a window if needed, and a seat belt cutter to free yourself if the belt is jammed.
Manual release on Model Y
Front seats
Each front occupant has a manual mechanical handle located in front of the window switches. Look for a small triangle icon showing an open door. Pull the handle straight up to open the door manually.
Rear seats
For rear passengers, a small access panel sits in the door pocket beneath the main handle, marked with a triangle and a car/door icon. Remove that panel to reveal a pull ring; pull the ring toward the front of the car to manually open the door.
Manual release on Model X
Front doors
Same as other models: pull the mechanical release handle located near the window switches upward.
Rear (Falcon) doors
Falcon doors lack a typical lower pocket. Passengers must remove the speaker grille on the door panel; behind it is a mechanical cable near the top of the exposed section. Pull the cable down and slightly back to open the door.
Manual release on Model S
Rear seats
Manual release mechanisms are located under the rear seats and behind the carpet facing the front of the car. Fold the carpet edge back, locate the release handles, and pull them toward the center of the vehicle to exit.
