The Grand Theatre at the Cairo Opera House witnessed an exceptional artistic experience during one of the performances of the “100 Years of Music” project, presented in collaboration between the Cairo Opera House, headed by Dr. Alaa Abdel Salam, and renowned singer Ali El Haggar.

The evening featured performances by artist Tarek Fouad alongside emerging talents Abdel Aziz Suleiman, Omnia Bakr, and Alia Nada, conducted by maestro Wagdy El Fawy and directed by Ahmed Fouad, before a large and enthusiastic audience.

On stage, the melodies of legendary composer Sayed Mekawy flowed seamlessly, reviving iconic musical phrases associated with the golden voices of Arab music. Ali El Haggar’s voice, joined by guest performers, moved gracefully through authentic Eastern maqams that carried the unmistakable spirit of Egyptian identity.

The concert included a rich selection of Mekawy’s timeless works such as Awal Kalamy Salam, Es’al Marra Alaya, Oqaty Bethelw, El Ard Betetkallem Arabi, and many others that resonated deeply with the audience.

One of the evening’s highlights was the performance of the iconic operetta El Leila El Kebira, accompanied by marionette puppets and miniature stage designs inspired by traditional Egyptian street festivals, adding a vivid visual dimension to the musical experience.

The program also featured selections from Salah Jahin’s famous quatrains set to music by Mekawy, reflecting deep philosophical and emotional themes that remain relevant across generations.

Sayed Mekawy’s Legacy in a Contemporary Vision

The concert showcased Sayed Mekawy’s musical genius through a modern artistic lens, aligning with the vision of the “100 Years of Music” project, which documents the evolution of Arab music during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The project aims to reaffirm Egypt’s artistic leadership, introduce younger generations to musical heritage, highlight social and political transformations reflected in music, and provide a platform for emerging talents to express themselves.
