📰 After 11 Years of Absence, Bassem Youssef Returns to Egyptian Television

After more than 11 years away from Egyptian screens, satirical TV host and former heart surgeon Bassem Youssef has made his long-awaited return through an interview on the program "Kelimah Akheera" (Last Word), hosted by Ahmed Salem on ON TV.
During the episode, which aired on Tuesday evening, Youssef spoke openly about his feelings toward Egypt after many years abroad, saying:
"I’ve really missed Egypt. In my mind, it’s still the Egypt of 2014, but I love it just the same."
Youssef reflected on his journey since leaving the country, emphasizing that the political satire he became famous for in his hit show “Al-Bernameg” was always tied to specific moments in time.
"Political comedy has a short lifespan because it lives in the moment," he explained.
He also said he doesn’t mind being labeled as a clown, adding humorously:
"If people see me as an 'aragouz' (a jester), that’s fine — as long as I can make them laugh and feel lighter."
Youssef discussed his career abroad and revealed that he has not practiced medicine for more than 15 years, joking:
"That’s probably for their own good!"
He clarified that this appearance doesn’t mark a full return to Egyptian media, but rather an opportunity to share untold stories and behind-the-scenes moments, stating:
"People want to hear what really happened behind the curtain — and now’s the right time to tell it our way."
This marks Bassem Youssef’s first appearance on an Egyptian TV channel since 2014, when his groundbreaking satirical show ended — a program that remains one of the most influential in the history of Arab television.
