Ahmed Maher Calls for Urgent Reform to Revive Egyptian Theatre
Veteran actor Ahmed Maher has called for comprehensive reforms to restore Egyptian theatre, stressing the importance of stronger scripts, better financial support for performers, and a greater role for cultural institutions.
Veteran Egyptian actor Ahmed Maher has expressed concern about the current state of Egyptian theatre, describing the need for a comprehensive reform plan capable of restoring its historic role in the country's cultural life.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 19th National Theatre Festival of Egypt, Maher emphasized that theatre remains one of the country's most influential cultural platforms, but requires meaningful changes to regain its vitality.
He argued that improving theatre begins with bringing experienced playwrights back to the stage and investing in high-quality dramatic writing capable of engaging modern audiences.
Maher also highlighted the importance of increasing actors' salaries and providing better working conditions, believing that stronger financial incentives would encourage greater artistic participation and improve production quality.
In addition, he stressed the significant role of the Ministry of Culture in supporting theatrical institutions, expanding productions across Egypt, and ensuring theatre reaches audiences beyond the capital.
Maher's remarks came during a festival that also honored several distinguished artists, including Essaad Younes, Shahira, Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Magdy Mogahid, Hamdy El-Gabry, and Ahmed El-Banhawy, celebrating their contributions to Egyptian theatre.
The festival's opening ceremony featured "Safar" (Journey), a visually rich performance directed by Walid Aouni, celebrating Egypt's cultural diversity and the festival's mission to bring theatre to audiences across the country's governorates.
