🎭 Ahmed Maher Explains His Emotional Reaction

Veteran Egyptian actor Ahmed Maher has opened up about the reason behind the anger and mixed emotions he displayed when he was honored at the 19th National Festival for Egyptian Theatre.

In exclusive remarks to Sada El Balad, Maher explained that his frustration was never directed at the honor itself, but rather at the fact that it came much later than he believed it should have.

He said that, considering his long-standing contribution to Egyptian and Arab theatre, he expected to receive such recognition years earlier.

🏆 "The Honor Came Too Late"

Maher stated that many artists with shorter theatrical careers had been honored before him, which made him feel that his own contributions had not received the appreciation they deserved.

He described the moment as a mixture of sadness and happiness—sad because the recognition arrived after many years, yet happy because his theatrical legacy was finally acknowledged.

The actor added that, despite his disappointment over the timing, he remains grateful that his career has ultimately been recognized.

🎬 Speaking on "Ma'akum"

Following his recognition, Ahmed Maher appeared on the television program "Ma'akum" hosted by Mona El Shazly, where he discussed several milestones from his artistic career.

He explained that theatre has been part of his life since his amateur days, through his academic studies, and into his professional career.

Joking about the delayed recognition, Maher said:

"How could theatre forget me?"

He also noted that he proudly carries the title "Knight of Arab Theatre," highlighting that he performed in several productions requiring horseback scenes on stage, something he considers among the most challenging experiences of his career.

Maher also recalled his participation in the acclaimed film "Nasser 56," revealing that he accepted the role despite receiving a modest salary.

He explained that his admiration for former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser motivated his decision, saying that the establishment of the Academy of Arts during Nasser's era played a significant role in shaping his generation of artists.

Because of that, he accepted the role without hesitation.

Maher also praised the late Ahmed Zaki, describing his portrayal of Gamal Abdel Nasser as intelligent and unforgettable, adding that the film remains one of the most important works of his career.

🎭 Mastering the Upper Egyptian Dialect

Addressing a common misconception, Ahmed Maher clarified that he is originally from Bulaq Abu El Ela in Cairo—not Upper Egypt.

He explained that his convincing command of the Upper Egyptian dialect came through academic training, where he studied regional dialects and traditional expressions.

This training later helped him perform several memorable roles, including his performance in the stage play "Screams of Silence."

Maher emphasized that his academic background has been essential in enabling him to portray a wide variety of characters throughout his artistic journey.
