Heliopolis Library and Its Cultural History
Heliopolis Library is one of Egypt’s longstanding cultural institutions. King Farouk laid the foundation stone for the library in 1945.
The library began its activities on November 20, 1946, under the name Princess Ferial Library, named after and established under the patronage of Princess Ferial, the youngest daughter of King Farouk.
In 1984, the library underwent a major rehabilitation and renovation project before reopening to visitors. At the time, its collection included around 10,000 books in Arabic, English and French.
The library continued to expand its cultural activities over the following years. A cinema club was established in 1986, while the automation of library operations began in 1990.
In 1996, the library’s theater was expanded and a new children’s library building was established. A computer center followed in 1997, while a cultural café was added in 1998.
Activity halls and a language center were also established in 2003, further expanding the library’s cultural and educational services.
