American actor Anthony Mackie, known for his work in Marvel films, is preparing to return to the Broadway stage in a major new production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth in spring 2027.
The production will mark Mackie’s return to theater after an absence of around 16 years, giving the actor an opportunity to move away from the action-heavy and superhero roles that have defined much of his recent film career.
Anthony Mackie to Play Macbeth on Broadway
Anthony Mackie revealed that he will star in a new production of Macbeth, which is moving to New York following a successful run at London’s Donmar Warehouse in 2023.
The production will be directed by Max Webster, who previously staged the London version. That production featured David Tennant as Macbeth and Cush Jumbo as Lady Macbeth.
Rehearsals for the Broadway production are scheduled to begin in February 2027, with performances expected to start in the spring and Mackie’s run scheduled to continue through July.
The Broadway theater hosting the production has not yet been announced, and the rest of the cast has also yet to be revealed, including the actress who will play Lady Macbeth.
Anthony Mackie Calls Theater His First Passion
Mackie has expressed strong excitement about returning to the stage, emphasizing that theater was his first passion before he established himself as a major Hollywood star.
The actor said his love for theater began when he was seven years old, making the opportunity to play Macbeth on Broadway particularly meaningful.
Macbeth is considered one of Shakespeare’s most demanding and iconic roles, attracting generations of actors who have sought to bring their own interpretation to the ambitious Scottish nobleman.
Anthony Mackie Prepares Physically and Vocally for Macbeth
Mackie is preparing for the demanding role through physical training and vocal work, recognizing the unique demands of a Broadway production.
Broadway shows can typically involve eight performances per week, requiring actors to maintain their physical and vocal performance consistently throughout the run.
The challenge differs significantly from playing a superhero in an action movie, as theater requires sustained live performance in front of an audience without the option of retaking scenes or relying on cinematic editing and effects.
A Different Chapter for the Marvel Star
Anthony Mackie’s return to theater comes after years of major screen roles, during which he became one of Marvel’s most recognizable stars, particularly through his portrayal of Sam Wilson / Captain America.
Playing Macbeth will allow Mackie to explore a very different side of his acting abilities, away from superhero action, large-scale stunts and cinematic spectacle.
His Broadway return is expected to become an important milestone in his theater career, particularly as he takes on one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated dramatic characters.
