In a move that has triggered widespread debate, Egypt’s Interior Ministry’s security apparatus arrested content creator Qamar El-Wakala, residing in the Imbaba district of Giza. This followed a number of reports alleging that she published videos on social media platforms featuring indecent words and scenes considered to violate public morals.

After legal procedures were followed, the suspect was targeted and detained. During interrogation, she admitted to uploading the clips to raise her view count and earn money from engagements and advertisements. She stated that she had used “stimulation and challenge” to attract followers, saying she “wanted views and to make money”.

The case was forwarded to the Public Prosecution, which initiated investigations. A court hearing has been scheduled to consider the charges, including misuse of social media platforms and undermining public decency and moral standards.

The incident has reopened discussion over freedom of expression online and the role of regulatory authorities in controlling content that may be deemed offensive or harmful to public morals, especially amid the rise of “viral content” and monetization strategies by some creators.
