Dhafer L'Abidine has arrived in Jordan's capital to premiere “Sophia” during the opening of the 7th Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film, one of the region's leading platforms for first-feature filmmakers and emerging cinematic voices.
Written, directed, produced, and starring Dhafer L'Abidine, “Sophia” follows Emily, who travels from London to Tunisia hoping to reunite her daughter Sophia with her estranged husband Hicham. What begins as a family reconciliation quickly turns into a psychological thriller when Sophia suddenly disappears.
As secrets, lies, and betrayals emerge, Emily races against time to uncover the truth and save her daughter while her family's fragile world begins to collapse.
The film features an international cast including Jessica Brown Findlay, Jonathan Hyde, Kais Setti, Hiba Abouk, Ziad Ayadi, and Souad Ben Slimane. It is a Tunisian-British co-production that brings together experienced filmmakers from both the Arab world and Europe.
This year's Amman International Film Festival showcases 82 films from 27 countries, including 10 world premieres, two international premieres, and five Arab premieres. Selected from nearly 900 submissions, the festival offers audiences a rich cinematic experience alongside industry events, workshops, and discussions with filmmakers and international experts.
With “Sophia,” Dhafer L'Abidine continues expanding his creative vision, presenting a suspenseful story that combines emotional depth with cinematic ambition.
