The fourth edition of the Semsemia Festival will officially open in Ismailia on Sunday, July 26, at the Ismailia Culture Palace, celebrating one of Egypt's most treasured folk music traditions.

Held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Ismailia Governorate, the two-day festival reflects ongoing efforts to preserve Egypt's intangible cultural heritage and promote traditional arts among younger generations.

This year's edition is dedicated to the late artist Mohamed El-Waziri, honoring his outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting Semsemia music throughout his career.

The opening ceremony will feature a documentary highlighting his artistic journey, followed by tribute ceremonies recognizing distinguished Semsemia musicians, including Fawzy El-Gamal, Ahmed Mansi, and Eid from South Sinai. The festival will also honor the memories of Mohamed El-Waziri, Captain Ghazaly, and Mohamed Mida.

Audiences will enjoy performances by folk music ensembles representing Ismailia, Port Said, Suez, South Sinai, Aswan, Dakahlia, the Red Sea Governorate, and other regions, showcasing Egypt's cultural diversity through traditional music and dance.

The Semsemia instrument has long been associated with Egypt's Canal cities, where it became a symbol of community, resilience, and national identity. Its songs have documented social life, historical events, and patriotic moments for generations.

The festival gains additional significance following the inscription of the Semsemia tradition on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024, highlighting its international cultural value.

Beyond performances, the event aims to encourage younger generations to embrace traditional arts and ensure that this unique musical heritage continues to thrive for years to come.
