Remembering “Abla Fadila”: The Voice That Shaped Arab Childhood Memories

🌟 Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Fadila Tawfiq, famously known as “Abla Fadila”, a pioneering figure in Egyptian and Arab radio. Her program “Ghnwa wa Hodota” shaped the childhood of countless Arab children, combining storytelling with music to teach values like honesty, cooperation, and diligence. 🎶📖
👶 Born in 1929 in Cairo to a culturally engaged family, she was the eldest among her siblings, including the late actress Mohsena Tawfiq. She attended Princess Feryal School, studied alongside Faten Hamama, and graduated from Cairo University’s Faculty of Law in 1951, before pursuing her true passion in broadcasting.
🎤 She joined Egyptian Radio in 1953, starting as an announcer, then newsreader, later moving to talk shows, and finally realizing her dream of working with children’s programs after collaborating with Mohamed Mahmoud Shaaban “Baba Sharo”.
📺 In 1959, she began hosting “Ghnwa wa Hodota”, becoming synonymous with Arab childhood. The program hosted cultural and artistic icons such as Naguib Mahfouz, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Abdel Halim Hafez, and featured popular stories like Ashatar Al-Shattar, Cup of Milk, The Goat and the Wolf, Sultan’s Cook.
🏆 Beyond presenting, she served as Director of Children’s Programs (1970–1980) and created “Mostaqbali”, introducing children to various professions. She received numerous awards, including the Egyptian Presidential Merit Medal, recognition from the Soviet Union, the Journalists’ Syndicate, and the Media Syndicate.
❤️ She married engineer Ibrahim Abosrea Ali and had a daughter, Reem, who accompanied her in her final years in Canada. Abla Fadila passed away on March 23, 2023, at the age of 94.
💬 She viewed children’s programs as an educational mission, stating: “I don’t like the title Mama… I want to be their older sister,” emphasizing storytelling as a tool for instilling moral values.
