Remembering Mohamed El-Qasabgi: Oud Genius and Pioneer of Arabic Music
Today marks the anniversary of the passing of musician Mohamed El-Qasabgi, a revolutionary figure in Arabic music, whose innovative compositions and oud mastery reshaped Arabic singing and inspired generations of musicians.
✨ Born on April 15, 1892, in Cairo, Mohamed El-Qasabgi grew up in a musical family. His father, Sheikh Ali Ibrahim El-Qasabgi, was a renowned musician and oud teacher. Though initially steered toward education and religion, El-Qasabgi’s passion for music emerged early, imitating his father and singing compositions of Salama Hegazy.
📌 He studied at Al-Azhar and later trained as a primary school teacher, but music remained his calling, leading him to pursue a professional musical career.
🎶 His early breakthrough came with the song "Ma Leesh Malek Fel Albi Gherak" performed by Zaki Murad, followed by his first professional composition "Watan Gamalak Foudy Yahoon Aleik Yendam". He joined the El-Akkad orchestra as a qanun player and later ventured into popular songs like "Baad El-Asha" and "Shal El-Hamam Hot El-Hamam", blending folk and classical styles.
💡 In 1923, after hearing Umm Kulthum, he composed her first song in 1924, "Qal Eih Halaf Ma Yekallemnish", beginning a creative partnership spanning over forty years with 72 legendary songs including "In Kont Asameh Wa Ansa Al-Aseya", "Sakat Wal-Damaa Etkallam", and "Raq El-Habeeb".
🎻 In 1927, El-Qasabgi established his own orchestra, incorporating Western instruments like cello and double bass, designing new oud dimensions to enhance tonal richness.
🎭 He enriched musical theater with works such as "Al-Mazluma", "Kid El-Nesas", "Hayat El-Nofous", and "Haram El-Moftesh", as well as composing for operettas and the first act of Verdi’s "Aida" performed by Umm Kulthum.
🎬 A leading composer in Egyptian cinema, he created iconic songs for Umm Kulthum, Laila Murad, Nour El-Hoda, and Asmahan, shaping stars of Arabic music and mentoring legends like Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Riyad Al-Sunbati, and Farid Al-Atrash.
🤝 His collaboration with poet Ahmed Rami produced countless masterpieces, completing a legendary trio with Umm Kulthum.
🕯️ El-Qasabgi passed away on March 25, 1966, at age 74, leaving an unparalleled musical legacy that continues to inspire Arabic music today.
