He played the character in several popular films, including “Ismail Yassin in the Army,” “Ismail Yassin in the Secret Police,” “Ismail Yassin in the Navy,” “Ibn Hamido,” “Al-Ataba Al-Khadra,” “Lokanda Al-Mofagaat,” and “Ismail Yassin in the Zoo.”
He also appeared in notable films such as “Enta Habibi,” “Share' El-Hob,” “Mismar Goha,” and “Al-Ostaza Fatma.”
Despite rarely playing leading roles, Al-Qasabgi consistently commanded attention whenever he appeared on screen, thanks to his distinctive comic style and memorable physical presence.
Riyad Al-Qasabgi’s Illness and Final Years
Riyad Al-Qasabgi was married twice and had two sons, including Fathy Al-Qasabgi, who later spoke about his father’s final years.
The actor suffered a serious health setback that resulted in paralysis on the left side of his body following high blood pressure. His condition eventually prevented him from continuing his acting career.
Director Hassan El-Imam attempted to cast him in “Al-Khataya,” starring Abdel Halim Hafez, but Al-Qasabgi’s health prevented him from completing the filming. It became one of his final attempts to return to the screen.
His Son’s Account of His Relationship with Ismail Yassin
Fathy Al-Qasabgi later spoke about his father’s relationship with Ismail Yassin during the final period of his life.
According to his account, Ismail Yassin did not visit Al-Qasabgi while he was ill and did not attend his funeral after his death.
The incident reportedly had a painful emotional impact on Al-Qasabgi, particularly after years of professional collaboration and shared success.
At the same time, Fathy recalled that several actors supported his father during his illness, including renowned actor Farid Shawqi.
Riyad Al-Qasabgi’s Death and Tragic Ending
Riyad Al-Qasabgi died on April 23, 1963, at the age of approximately 60, following years of illness that had kept him away from acting.
His family also faced financial difficulties after his death and struggled to cover the funeral expenses. Producer Gamal El-Laithi eventually covered the costs.
Despite the difficult final chapter of his life, Al-Qasabgi’s work continued to live on through Egyptian cinema, while his portrayal of Shaweesh Atiya secured his place among the most memorable comic performers of the golden age.
