Umm Kulthum’s granddaughter’s father affirms the family’s respect for her decision to retire from the arts and calmly responds to Medhat El Adl’s remarks.
The father of Sanaa, the granddaughter of the legendary Umm Kulthum, stated that his daughter was not at all bothered by the recent remarks made by producer Dr. Medhat El Adl regarding her decision to retire from the arts and wear the hijab. He noted that El Adl’s comments merely reflect his personal opinion, which he has every right to express without blame.
In a phone interview, he explained that Sanaa decided to leave the artistic field completely of her own free will, after a period of reflection and self-assessment. He confirmed that the family fully respected her decision and supported her choices, as she is following a path aligned with her personal convictions and mental peace.
Her father added:
“Sanaa doesn’t want to continue in the arts and has chosen to step away quietly. I fully respected that… She believes this is what’s best for her, and no one has the right to judge her.”
These statements come following a wave of controversy sparked by Dr. Medhat El Adl, head of the Egyptian Society of Authors and Composers, who expressed surprise at Sanaa’s decision. He said he had been impressed by her talent since her notable appearance on the talent show The Voice Kids, believing she had a promising artistic future.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Society’s new headquarters, El Adl commented:
“When I saw her on The Voice Kids, I said I must follow her career. I asked about her and was told she had put on the hijab and retired… Umm Kulthum died as Umm Kulthum, and now imagine her granddaughter walking away from art like this — where are we headed?”
Despite his remarks, Sanaa’s family chose not to respond aggressively. Instead, her father replied calmly, reiterating his full respect for Dr. Medhat El Adl while emphasizing that his daughter’s decision came from deep personal conviction and was not influenced by any external pressure.
He concluded that everyone has the right to choose their own path in life, whether in art or otherwise, and that Sanaa has chosen peace and personal fulfillment, with no intention of returning to the spotlight.
