OpenAI has introduced a groundbreaking update to ChatGPT that allows users to interact with a variety of third-party applications directly within the chat interface. This marks a major step in transforming ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a fully integrated digital assistant.
The update leverages the new Model Context Protocol (MCP), a system that grants ChatGPT dynamic access to tools, data sources, and workflows across connected apps—all without leaving the chat window.
Now, users can summon specific apps simply by name. For example:
"Spotify, create a jazz playlist"
ChatGPT will execute the command inside the conversation, mimicking the behavior of a smart assistant like Siri or Alexa, but through a seamless text interface.
Currently supported apps include:
-
Spotify for music and playlists
Canva for graphic design
Zillow and Booking for real estate and hotel searches
Expedia for travel planning
Coursera for educational content
Figma for collaborative design
Beyond manual commands, ChatGPT can now automatically suggest relevant apps based on the conversation. For instance, if discussing vacation plans, it may propose tools like Expedia or Booking on its own.
The feature is available for users on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans—except within the European Union. OpenAI has also launched a developer SDK to allow custom app integrations, with plans to release a full app directory and monetization tools later this year.
Additionally, users can now purchase products from platforms like Etsy directly through the ChatGPT interface, signaling OpenAI’s broader ambition to make ChatGPT a centralized platform for browsing, buying, planning, learning, and creating.
This update reflects a shift toward AI-powered productivity ecosystems, where natural language interaction becomes the gateway to completing everyday tasks—quickly, intuitively, and in one place.
