Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, owner of SpaceX, has announced the launch of Starlink satellite internet services in Yemen, following significant disruptions in local internet infrastructure controlled by the Houthis in the capital, Sana’a.

According to Yemen’s General Telecommunications Corporation, Starlink will provide high-speed internet access without interruptions, especially in remote and underserved regions. The move is expected to enhance economic and social development and maintain digital connectivity across the country.

The introduction of Starlink is also expected to eliminate the black market for overpriced satellite dishes, which have been sold for up to $2,400 despite their actual cost being around $600.

What is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite-based internet system developed by SpaceX to deliver internet access to remote areas that cannot be reached through traditional infrastructure. The network consists of thousands of interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit, offering fast and reliable coverage.

How Starlink Works:
The service uses a ground antenna connected to a user router and modem, communicating with satellites to provide download speeds up to 500 Mbps and latency as low as 20 milliseconds. This makes it a powerful alternative for regions with weak or nonexistent broadband connectivity.

Challenges:
Despite its advantages, Starlink can be affected by severe weather conditions such as storms and heavy rain, which may cause temporary service disruptions. Additionally, cybersecurity threats like “man-in-the-middle” attacks remain a potential risk if data transmissions are intercepted.

Cost of Service:

Starlink Internet: $110 per month, speeds between 50–250 Mbps.

Starlink RV: $135 per month, same speeds, designed for mobile use.

Starlink Business: $500 per month, speeds up to 250 Mbps, receiver costs $2,500.

The launch of Starlink in Yemen marks a major milestone for the country’s digital landscape, opening new opportunities for education, business, and communication in regions long deprived of reliable internet access.
