Employees across Egypt—whether in the public or private sectors—are anticipating the official holiday for the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (Mawlid al-Nabawi) in 2025. It is one of the few remaining public holidays in the latter half of the year and the only occasion that falls within the month of September. It is also the second religious holiday of the new Hijri year 1447, following the Islamic New Year, giving it notable significance for many.

According to astronomical calculations released thus far, the Prophet’s birthday is expected to fall on Thursday, 4 September 2025, corresponding to the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal on the Hijri calendar—a date widely recognized by Islamic scholars as the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and observed across the Muslim world as a formal religious occasion.

The final date will be confirmed by Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta after the official moon-sighting for the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, scheduled to take place after sunset on Saturday, 23 August 2025, which coincides with the 29th of Safar. Based on this religious observation, the relevant authorities will formally announce the exact date of the holiday.

According to Egyptian labor laws, the Mawlid holiday is a paid official leave for employees in government institutions, public sector companies, private enterprises, schools, universities, banks, and the Egyptian Stock Exchange. As such, Thursday, 4 September, is expected to be a nationwide holiday across most sectors.

Regarding the duration of the holiday, public sector employees are likely to benefit from a three-day break—from Thursday through Saturday (4–5–6 September)—since Friday and Saturday are already designated as weekly days off in most governmental bodies. In the private sector, the holiday period varies depending on company policy: some firms offer a single day off, while others provide two consecutive days.

Notably, the Mawlid holiday arrives after a relatively long gap without any national holidays. The month of August is entirely free of official leave, and December is also expected to pass without any paid public holidays.

Thus, only two official holidays remain on the 2025 calendar:

* Prophet Muhammad’s birthday on Thursday, 4 September.
* Armed Forces Day on Monday, 6 October, marking the anniversary of the 1973 war victory.

Official government decisions are expected in the coming weeks to confirm the final holiday schedule, particularly if any adjustments are made due to lunar observations or if the date is shifted to align with the weekend, as occasionally happens with religious holidays.

Counselor Nevin Wahsh emphasizes that criminal investigations, despite their importance in the initial detection of crimes, cannot be considered fully-fledged evidence in criminal proceedings. Not every piece of information recorded in investigation reports rises to the level of legal proof, and the belief formed by law enforcement officers cannot, on its own, justify a criminal conviction.
