In the face of harsh weather conditions and rising electricity demand during the summer season, government and technical efforts are intensifying to restore power to several vital areas in Giza Governorate. This follows a complete technical outage at the Geziret El-Dahab transformer station, affiliated with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
The neighborhoods of Haram, Faisal, Saqiat Mekki, and parts of southern Giza have been experiencing a continuous power outage for four days. This has significantly impacted residents' daily lives and disrupted essential services, especially in densely populated areas and facilities that rely heavily on electricity, such as hospitals and health centers. Commercial and service activities have also been affected.
Maintenance and emergency teams, under direct supervision from the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, are racing against time to complete comprehensive repair and rehabilitation operations at the station. The technical plan includes removing the old, severely damaged cables—worn down over time and overloaded—and installing new ones that meet quality and safety standards.
So far, all damaged cable paths have been cleared. Highly trained technical teams, equipped with heavy machinery and precision instruments, are working around the clock to install the new cables and restore power as soon as possible.
At the same time, the Ministry has announced notable progress in implementing an alternative plan to provide supplemental power to the Geziret El-Dahab station through external sources. Most underground crossings have been completed, including challenging segments beneath railway lines, requiring meticulous coordination to avoid disruptions to infrastructure or train movement.
At the site of Feeder Cable No. 2, the first phase has already been repaired, while work is ongoing to complete the remaining two phases. Once fully operational, this cable will play a crucial role in reconnecting the station to the grid.
The Ministry of Electricity also confirmed that all critical facilities, including hospitals and security and service centers, are being powered through alternative energy sources. Additional mobile generators have been deployed to the most affected neighborhoods, as part of a temporary relief plan to ease the burden on citizens.
Officials reassured the public that senior leadership is monitoring developments in real time. Progress reports are being submitted regularly to the central operations room, where any obstacles encountered during the repair work are promptly addressed. Final testing of the new cables will begin once installation is complete, under the supervision of specialized committees to ensure safe and seamless reactivation.
It is worth noting that the Geziret El-Dahab transformer station is a strategic power hub that supplies a large portion of Giza. A comprehensive assessment of the station’s infrastructure is currently underway, with plans for its modernization and capacity enhancement. This falls under the Ministry’s broader strategy to upgrade the national grid and bolster power stability across all governorates.
