The first day of Egypt’s parliamentary elections saw a strong turnout across the 14 participating governorates. Counselor Ahmed Bendary, Executive Director of the National Election Authority, confirmed that the voting process ran smoothly and in full compliance with regulations. 🇪🇬

Bendary noted that voter turnout was particularly strong in Aswan, Assiut, Beni Suef, and Fayoum—especially in districts that include the hometowns of the candidates—leading to extended voting hours beyond 9 p.m. due to the large crowds.

He clarified that the heavy turnout in some districts was not due to slow procedures but to the large number of candidates, with some areas having more than sixty contenders, which naturally takes more time per voter.

Bendary added that the Authority’s operations room received what he described as “positive complaints,” mainly about long queues caused by high participation, emphasizing that the overall scene reflects the Egyptian people’s awareness and commitment to exercising their political rights.

He also praised the cooperation among various state institutions—including judges, security forces, and administrative bodies—which ensured the elections proceeded smoothly and transparently.

Regarding reports of a candidate’s withdrawal, Bendary confirmed that the Authority had received no official request, and the candidate remains listed on the ballot. He added that only one withdrawal, in Matrouh, was officially approved before voting began.

Bendary predicted that voter turnout would increase on the second day, especially after working hours, noting that many Egyptians prefer voting later in the process. He encouraged citizens to participate actively, pointing out that a candidate’s ability to mobilize supporters remains key to high voter turnout.

He concluded that polling stations will open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with possible extensions if large crowds remain, ensuring every voter gets the chance to cast their ballot. 🗳️
