In a horrific accident described as one of the worst tragedies on Egypt’s regional road this year, 18 people lost their lives and several others were injured early this morning in a violent collision between a truck and a microbus near Ashmoun Police Station in Menoufia Governorate.

The incident caused widespread shock among local residents, particularly in the village of Kafr Al-Sanabsa, part of the Menouf district, which lost multiple members in a single blow. The grief-stricken community is now mourning collectively.

Medical sources confirmed that hospitals across the governorate quickly received both the bodies and the injured. Quesna Central Hospital received six fatalities, Ashmoun General Hospital admitted five, El-Bagour Specialized Hospital recorded another five, and Sers El-Layan Central Hospital reported two. Meanwhile, Ashmoun General also treated four injured individuals who are currently under medical care.

Authorities noted that several victims remained unidentified due to the absence of personal identification documents, with early investigations revealing that some were under 18 years old, complicating efforts to identify them promptly. Intensive efforts are underway to determine the identities and notify their families.
Following the tragedy, Menoufia’s Health Directorate declared a state of emergency in all area hospitals, increasing readiness levels for emergency teams. The Ambulance Authority deployed multiple vehicles to transport victims from the crash site to the nearest medical centers, racing against time to save lives and provide psychological and medical support to the bereaved families.

On the security front, Major General Mahmoud El-Kamouny, Menoufia’s Security Director, received a report from Colonel Mohamed Abu El-Azm, head of Ashmoun Police Station, confirming the incident. Police forces, civil defense, ambulances, and traffic patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage the aftermath, restore road safety, and begin investigation procedures.

Preliminary reports suggest that excessive speed may have been a key factor in causing the crash. The Public Prosecution has launched a formal investigation to uncover the full circumstances and assign responsibility.

This heartbreaking event has reignited nationwide calls to increase monitoring on highways, enforce stricter regulations for truck drivers, and improve road infrastructure to safeguard lives and prevent further human tragedies of this scale.
