Nvidia shares fell by 2.3%, or $4.39, to $183.33 following the announcement of a multi-billion-dollar deal between AMD and OpenAI. The agreement includes OpenAI’s adoption of up to 6 gigawatts of computing power using AMD’s high-performance Instinct GPUs, posing a direct challenge to Nvidia’s long-standing dominance in AI acceleration technologies.

Following the news, AMD’s stock surged by 27.6% to reach $210.12, highlighting investor confidence in the company's growing foothold in the AI market. Tech giants like Google and Amazon are also developing their own AI chips, further intensifying competition in the sector.

Despite the initial drop, Nvidia stock quickly began to recover, closing down only 0.81% at $186.10. Market analysts remain largely optimistic, with 60 out of 66 surveyed recommending a buy rating for Nvidia.

Nvidia has long led the AI hardware market thanks to its powerful GPUs, which use parallel processing—allowing thousands of cores to compute vast amounts of data simultaneously. This architecture is ideal for AI workloads, particularly those involving matrix multiplication. In contrast, CPUs process tasks sequentially, making them less efficient for deep learning applications.

While AMD’s move introduces serious competition, Nvidia remains a powerhouse, especially given the surging global demand for AI infrastructure. However, the coming months could be crucial in reshaping leadership in the advanced computing space.
