The Central Operations Room of the General Syndicate of Educational Professions, headed by Dr. Khalaf Al-Zanati, Head of the Teachers’ Syndicate and President of the Arab Teachers Union, has followed up on an incident that sparked widespread controversy on social media. The incident involved verbal abuse and an attempted assault by some parents against a teacher assigned as an exam monitor at a high school exam committee in Cairo Governorate.
The incident took place last Sunday at the El-Naam Preparatory School Committee, under the Ain Shams Educational Administration, affiliated with the Cairo Directorate of Education. It occurred after the English language exam had ended. Around 1:15 p.m. — more than an hour after the exam concluded — several parents arrived at the exam center claiming that invigilators and supervisors had collected students’ answer sheets before the official end time of the exam.
As some of the parents attempted to force their way into the school premises, the situation escalated into a verbal altercation, including offensive language directed at one of the female teachers assigned to monitor the exam. She was also subjected to an attempted physical assault by a few parents, leading to chaos. Some bystanders recorded the incident on video and posted it on social media, where it quickly went viral and attracted significant public attention.
Upon being notified of the incident, the committee administration immediately summoned the police, who arrived at the scene within minutes. Both parties were questioned, and after reviewing the incident, it was confirmed that the invigilators had adhered strictly to the Ministry of Education’s official regulations regarding the timing of distributing question papers and collecting answer booklets. No violations of exam procedures were recorded.
The assaulted teacher demonstrated a highly professional and humane attitude, expressing full understanding of the psychological pressure experienced by parents during exam season. As a teacher and a mother herself, she empathized with the anxiety families endure at such times. The matter was peacefully resolved when the parents offered a formal apology, and the teacher graciously accepted it without filing an official police report.
In response, Dr. Khalaf Al-Zanati assigned Mr. Sayed Adam, Treasurer of the Solidarity Fund at the General Syndicate and Head of the East Cairo Committee, along with Mr. Mohamed Imam, Treasurer of the Sub-Committee, to contact the teacher, check on her mental well-being, and extend appreciation for her wise handling of the situation and for choosing to waive her legal rights in favor of maintaining stability and calm within the exam environment.
Dr. Al-Zanati emphasized that the syndicate is closely monitoring any incident that affects the dignity and authority of teachers, stressing that protecting educators during their official duties is a non-negotiable priority. He also highlighted ongoing coordination with security and oversight bodies to ensure a safe and respectful atmosphere in examination venues.
Furthermore, he urged the Ministry of Education to review and update mechanisms for securing exam committees and to strictly prevent any attempts by outsiders to breach or disrupt them. He underlined that preserving the integrity and calm of the examination process is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
