Tsunami warnings after the strongest Kamchatka earthquake since 1952
Experts warn of possible tsunami waves reaching Pacific nations after the powerful earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka.
Pacific nations are experiencing a state of concern and anticipation following the powerful earthquake that struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday evening, as experts warned that strong tsunami waves could reach the coasts in the coming hours.
Charlotte Kraftzyk, an expert at the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Germany, confirmed that waves generated by underwater earthquakes usually take several hours to reach shorelines, noting that this period represents a critical window requiring the utmost caution.
Several countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, including Russia, Japan, the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Indonesia, as well as countries in Central and South America, issued urgent warnings of possible tsunami waves hitting their coasts at any moment. These warnings came after the earthquake struck at 23:24 GMT, 136 kilometers southeast of Kamchatka, a remote area in the far east of Russia.
According to U.S. seismic monitoring centers, the earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, while the Russian Academy of Sciences estimated its magnitude at 8.7, making it the strongest quake the region has experienced since 1952. The centers confirmed that the epicenter was underwater, which increased the likelihood of devastating tsunami waves.
Kraftzyk revealed that flood waves approximately one meter high had already hit Japan’s Pacific coast and some Hawaiian beaches, but she stressed that this does not mean the danger is over. She explained that the first waves are sometimes less severe, and larger, more destructive waves may follow in the coming hours, especially if new aftershocks occur.
The expert called on all authorities in the affected countries to continue implementing emergency and evacuation plans when necessary, warning residents to stay away from beaches until further notice. She noted that the impact of tsunami waves can extend thousands of kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter, making real-time monitoring essential to minimize potential loss of life and property.
This earthquake serves as a reminder of the power of natural disasters striking coastal regions bordering oceans, amid warnings that the worst may not yet have occurred.
