Elon Musk has begun implementing one of his most ambitious steps in the tech world by officially transforming Twitter into a new platform known as "X." This is part of his quest to create what he calls a “super app” that brings together messaging, content, financial services, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce in one integrated experience.
The transformation started with the removal of the platform’s iconic blue bird logo—used since its founding in 2006—and its replacement with an illuminated “X” on the company’s headquarters. The official domain also changed to X.com, though the traditional twitter.com address still functions. However, the blue bird logo still appears within the mobile app, awaiting a complete update.
Musk’s ambition for “X” dates back to the late 1990s, when he founded an online banking company with the same name—X.com—which later merged into PayPal. But the dream never died; Musk repurchased the domain in 2017 and is now relaunching it as part of his broader vision.
According to the platform’s CEO Linda Yaccarino, “X” will not be just another social network, but a platform built on artificial intelligence, integrating video, podcasts, banking services, digital payments, and even car booking and food ordering—offering an experience similar to WeChat in China and GoJek in Indonesia.
In July, the platform obtained licenses to offer financial services in three U.S. states, signaling legal readiness to provide future payment and money transfer solutions within the app—marking a major step in its transformation into a super app.
Musk’s fascination with the letter “X” is nothing new—it appears in nearly all of his ventures, from SpaceX, to the Tesla Model X, and even to the name of his child X Æ A-12, who is nicknamed “X.” The legal structure for acquiring Twitter also involved a series of companies named X Holdings I, II, III, culminating in X Corp, now the official name of the platform’s parent company.
Musk sees “X” as the future of the internet—a central hub for everything users currently do across various apps. It may be his most serious attempt yet to build an American-made super app, a model that has yet to be widely achieved outside Asia.
