With the Knowledge of the School Administration… What Is the Story of Yassin, the Child Victim of Sexual Assault in Beheira?
The case of the child Yassin — a kindergarten student at a private school in Damanhour, Beheira Governorate — shocked Egyptian public opinion after it was revealed that he had been sexually assaulted within the school premises. The incident sparked major questions about school security, administrative responsibility, and the absence or failure of proper supervision in places that are supposed to be the safest for children.
This was not just an isolated criminal incident. It became a public opinion case because it happened inside an educational institution that is supposed to protect and nurture children, not leave them vulnerable to violations of their most basic human rights.
How Did the Story Begin?
The child’s family noticed a clear change in his behavior:
Severe fear of going to school
Refusal to use the bathroom
Unexplained crying spells
Psychological and behavioral disturbances
Faced with these alarming changes, the family decided to have the child undergo a medical examination, which revealed signs of previous sexual assault. They immediately reported the incident to the authorities and an official investigation was launched.
During the investigation, the accusation was directed at one of the school’s employees who held an administrative position (financial auditor), not a direct teacher of the child. This raised serious questions:
How was an administrative employee able to reach a young child inside the school?
Where was the supervision? Where was the administration?
The School’s Role… Between Denial and Responsibility
The school administration stated — during the investigation — that it had conducted an internal inquiry after suspecting the incident. However, that investigation neither prevented the crime nor revealed it in time, which raises several disturbing possibilities:
Severe negligence in supervision
Attempted concealment or cover-up
Weak reporting and protection mechanisms
The presence of the perpetrator inside the school environment and his ability to lure a young child to semi-isolated areas (such as restrooms or internal facilities) proves without a doubt that the school’s safety system was weak or dysfunctional.
The lack of constant supervision and poor distribution of security responsibilities were major factors that contributed to the crime.
At this point, the incident was no longer just an individual crime… it became an institutional failure that requires accountability.
Court Sessions and the Verdict
The accused was referred to the Criminal Court on charges of sexually assaulting a minor under threat.
During the court sessions, several protective measures were taken for the child, most notably his appearance wearing a Spider-Man costume, in an attempt to:
Protect him psychologically
Hide his identity from public exposure
Give him a sense of strength and courage
The court initially issued a harsh prison sentence against the defendant, which was later amended at the appeal stage to several years of hard labor in prison.
Despite differing opinions on the length of the sentence, the case was considered a victory for the child and for justice, and a clear message that crimes against children will not go unpunished.
The Psychological and Social Impact
This case did not affect the child’s family alone, but extended to:
Parents in all schools
Educational institutions
Society as a whole
For many families, schools became a source of fear and distrust, especially for younger children. The case raised a critical question:
Are our children really safe inside school walls?
From a psychological perspective, a child victim of sexual abuse needs years of therapy and support. Such trauma does not only affect the body but leaves deep psychological wounds that may shape the child’s future if not treated properly.
An Analysis of the School’s Responsibility
From an educational management perspective, schools bear three major responsibilities in such cases:
1. Prevention Before the Crime
Activating surveillance in all areas of the school
Never leaving children unattended
Preventing non-teaching staff from approaching children unnecessarily
2. Strict Response to Suspicion
Any report or suspicion must be immediately investigated
The suspected person must be isolated from children at once
Authorities must be informed without hesitation
3. Support After the Incident
Issuing an official apology and taking responsibility
Full cooperation with investigations
Providing psychological support to the child and the family
The absence of any of these pillars means that the institution has failed in its most basic role: Protection before Education.
Lessons Learned
The case of Yassin is not just a passing incident — it is a wake-up call for every school in Egypt and the Arab world, requiring serious revision of:
Installing effective surveillance cameras in all corridors
Strictly banning any adult from being alone with a child
Training all employees in child-protection ethics
Creating psychological and behavioral protection units in schools
Encouraging children to speak up without fear
Immediately informing parents of any unusual incidents
Conclusion
What Yassin endured is a horrific crime. But even more horrifying is that it happened with the knowledge and inside the walls of a school administration that was supposed to protect him, not betray him.
This case exposed a dangerous flaw in school safety systems and confirmed that child protection is not a luxury — it is a moral, legal, and societal duty.
Yassin may be a victim…
But his voice has now become a message for every silent child, every negligent administration, and every society that must become more aware and more just.
