Medical staff at Sohag General Hospital saved the life of a 55-year-old woman after she was bitten by a venomous snake in her left foot. Snake bites are considered medical emergencies and the victim must be taken to a hospital immediately.

Symptoms of a Snake Bite
Symptoms vary by snake type, including visible marks such as deep wounds or minor scratches, swelling, bruising, severe pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion, weakness, muscle paralysis, and blurred vision. Some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with breathing difficulties, tongue and throat swelling, dizziness, or collapse.

Causes of Snake Bites
Snake bites inject venom through fangs. Venom is a mix of compounds designed to immobilize or kill prey and can cause serious complications in humans, including death in the case of some venomous snakes.

Diagnosis of Snake Bites
Diagnosis is based on the victim’s description of the snake and bite appearance, and may include blood tests to determine venom toxicity.

Treatment and First Aid
All snake bites should be treated as life-threatening emergencies. Essential first aid includes moving away from the snake, calling emergency services, keeping the victim calm, performing CPR if necessary, avoiding washing the bite, not attempting to suck out the venom, not cutting the wound, not applying a constrictive bandage incorrectly, and avoiding capturing or killing the snake.

How to Apply a Pressure Immobilization Bandage
Place a tubular bandage over the bite, then another bandage starting from the fingers or toes moving upwards. The bandage should be tight, and the limb immobilized with a splint. Note the bite time on the bandage or take a photo to indicate the location.

Antivenom Treatment
Approximately 5% of snake bite victims receive antivenom, injected directly into the bloodstream. The type of antivenom depends on the snake species, symptoms, and geographic location of the bite.
