After the Death of Al-Zohour Club Player… Gamal Shaaban Explains the Hidden Causes of Cardiac Arrest Underwater
The sudden passing of young swimmer Youssef Mohamed has sparked emotional reactions and revived discussions about cardiac risks during intensive swimming. Cardiologist Dr. Gamal Shaaban offered detailed medical insights into the causes of underwater cardiac arrest.
Dr. Gamal Shaaban’s statements came after the tragic death of 12-year-old swimmer Youssef Mohamed during a competition at Cairo Stadium. The medical report indicated that the young athlete suffered a sudden loss of consciousness followed by cardiac arrest underwater.
Medical Reasons Behind Underwater Cardiac Arrest
According to Dr. Shaaban, one of the most probable causes is malignant electrical activity syndrome, a condition that may be triggered by intense physical exertion and lead to life-threatening ventricular fibrillation. He added that the condition can be hereditary and often remains undetected without examinations such as ECG and cardiac ultrasound.
Neurological and Respiratory Factors During Drowning
He noted that excessive stimulation of the vagus nerve can cause a severe drop in heart rate leading to cardiac arrest. Rapid breathing caused by oxygen deficiency, or abrupt changes in carbon dioxide levels, further increases the risk.
Life-Saving Measures and Emergency Response
Dr. Shaaban emphasized that immediate intervention is crucial, including:
-
Removing water from the chest
-
Performing CPR
-
Using electric shocks
He stressed that children should undergo full cardiac assessments before practicing strenuous sports.
A Call to Spread CPR Awareness
He concluded by urging the public to learn basic CPR techniques, emphasizing that first-response actions can make the difference between life and death in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
Regular health screening is one of the most important steps to maintain good health and detect diseases early. The essential medical checkups for every age help in preventing complications and ensuring a healthier life.
Many people, after doing medical tests, receive their results and immediately start looking at numbers and unfamiliar terms like (High – Low – Normal) without fully understanding what they actually mean.
When dealing with medical services, many people come across different titles for doctors such as “Specialist” and “Consultant”, which can sometimes create confusion about what each title actually means and how they differ from each other.
Choosing the right time to visit a doctor is not a random decision. It can directly affect how quickly a condition is diagnosed and how effective the treatment will be. Many people delay visiting a doctor or go at the wrong time, which may lead to worsening symptoms or delayed care.
