The Egyptian Dar al-Ifta has clarified the Islamic ruling regarding the use of artificial intelligence to create videos simulating deceased individuals, following a question about producing a video based on a person’s photos and voice to recreate a specific moment from their life.

The ruling depends on the purpose and manner of use. If the technology is used to portray the deceased saying or doing things they never actually did, or to distort facts and mislead people, then it is considered prohibited in Islamic law due to falsehood and misrepresentation, as well as potential psychological harm.

It is also deemed impermissible if the intent is to provoke grief, reject reality, or excessively dwell on the past in a way that negatively affects a person’s mental well-being or contradicts acceptance of divine decree.

On the other hand, it is permissible if the purpose is remembrance, comfort, or supplication for the deceased, provided that no false attribution is made and no harm—whether legal, moral, or psychological—results from its use.

The key principle emphasized is honesty and integrity in representation, ensuring that such technologies are not used for deception or distortion, while maintaining adherence to ethical and religious guidelines.
