Bird Flu Outbreak in India Sparks Concern in Kerala
Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has killed thousands of birds in Kerala, India, prompting preventive culling and global health concerns.
Indian authorities, in coordination with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), have reported a new outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in poultry farms in Kerala during December.
The outbreak caused the death of approximately 54,100 birds, mostly ducks, with an additional 30,289 birds culled as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread.
This marks the first reported outbreak among poultry in India since May, with initial cases detected on December 9 and officially confirmed on December 22.
The resurgence of H5N1 raises concerns for the poultry industry and food supply chains due to significant losses, market disruption, and potential human health risks.
