Cosmetic Filler Warning: Risk of Blood Vessel Blockage
Experts warn of vascular complications from cosmetic fillers and highlight ultrasound as a safety measure.
Cosmetic experts have cautioned that filler injections can sometimes lead to major blood vessel blockages, posing serious health risks such as skin necrosis, tissue loss, and in severe cases, vision loss or stroke.
Study Details
Researchers analyzed 100 patients from six different sites who experienced vascular complications after hyaluronic acid injections between May 2022 and April 2025. The study showed that Doppler ultrasound can detect early blockages, enabling timely intervention and reducing permanent damage.
Dr. Rosa Maria Silveira Siegrist stated: "Ultrasound allows doctors to see the exact location of the filler and real-time blood flow, improving safety and treatment accuracy."
High-Risk Areas
-
Nose: Highest risk due to lateral nasal artery supplying blood to the eye and brain.
-
Face: 35% of patients showed blockages in major facial arteries.
-
Perforator vessels: 40% of patients experienced obstructions.
Prevention and Safety
Experts like Dr. Samuel Golbanian emphasize that working with a licensed, experienced physician keeps the risk under 1%. In contrast, untrained providers can increase complications to 10–20%.
Using ultrasound during injections is highly recommended for patient safety, either as an immediate guide during the procedure or to assess and manage treatment if blockages occur.
Regular health screening is one of the most important steps to maintain good health and detect diseases early. The essential medical checkups for every age help in preventing complications and ensuring a healthier life.
Many people, after doing medical tests, receive their results and immediately start looking at numbers and unfamiliar terms like (High – Low – Normal) without fully understanding what they actually mean.
When dealing with medical services, many people come across different titles for doctors such as “Specialist” and “Consultant”, which can sometimes create confusion about what each title actually means and how they differ from each other.
Choosing the right time to visit a doctor is not a random decision. It can directly affect how quickly a condition is diagnosed and how effective the treatment will be. Many people delay visiting a doctor or go at the wrong time, which may lead to worsening symptoms or delayed care.
