Dar Al-Ifta Clarifies: Ruling on Praying in Places Contaminated by Cat Urine
Dar Al-Ifta responds to a common question among pet owners regarding the purity of domestic cats and the ruling on praying in a home that may be contaminated with traces of urine.
Dar Al-Ifta issued a detailed clarification regarding the Islamic ruling on the impurity of cat urine and the permissibility of praying in places where it may have spread, following a question from a pet owner who reported that his cat occasionally leaves traces on the floor after using its litter area.
The institution affirmed that domestic cats are inherently pure according to the consensus of scholars, referencing the prophetic tradition indicating that cats are not impure and are considered among the “frequent visitors” to the household.
However, Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that cat urine and feces are impure, and if their presence on clothes, skin, or flooring is known, the area must be washed. If one is uncertain whether impurity has been transferred, the default ruling is purity and doubts should be avoided.
In cases where it is certain that the cat stepped on dried impurity and then contacted a moist hand, foot, or garment, the Hanafi view allows that no impurity is considered transferred unless a visible trace appears. When removing impurity becomes difficult, one may follow the Maliki view, which considers removing such impurity a sunnah in cases of hardship.
Dar Al-Ifta advised worshippers to allocate a separate area for prayer where the cat cannot enter, or to use a dedicated prayer mat that can be stored away after use.
