Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders among women of reproductive age. It is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen levels, and the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries. Although considered an endocrine and metabolic condition, its long-term health effects, including potential cancer risks, remain a concern.

Despite the correlation between PCOS and breast cancer, no direct causal link has been established. However, PCOS is often associated with obesity, elevated estrogen and insulin levels, and insulin resistance. These factors may contribute to abnormal cell growth and impair the body’s natural ability to eliminate damaged cells, potentially leading to cellular changes in breast tissue over time.

Research findings are mixed. Some studies indicate a moderate risk, while others find no significant association, especially when accounting for age, body mass index, and lifestyle. Overall, breast cancer risk is influenced by multiple general factors, including obesity, diabetes, persistent anovulation, and family history of cancer.

Risk management involves early treatment and a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, a balanced diet, maintaining an ideal weight, and healthy insulin levels. Regular check-ups, annual screenings, and breast self-examinations are also essential for early detection.

Although PCOS is not a direct cause of breast cancer, it may affect certain hormonal mechanisms linked to risk, emphasizing the importance of regular medical monitoring and a healthy lifestyle.
