Researchers emphasized that this method not only extends life expectancy but also improves quality of life by delaying disease progression. Dr. Stephen Friedland from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center explained that a 70-year-old man with recurrent prostate cancer could live about 15 additional years.
Prostate Cancer and Disease Recurrence
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among men globally after lung cancer. Studies indicate that one in three men treated surgically or with radiation may experience "biochemical recurrence," where PSA levels double within nine months or less, even if imaging does not detect a tumor.
Side Effects of the Dual Therapy
Experts note potential side effects, including fatigue and breast enlargement (gynecomastia). Dr. Friedland highlighted that choosing one or both drugs is highly personal, as combining them may increase side effect severity, particularly in men over 75.
