The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK has officially recommended a new drug for women with active multiple sclerosis, permitting its safe use during pregnancy. This milestone provides hope for women who wish to start a family without compromising their health or disease stability.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, where the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath of nerves, causing muscle weakness, balance and vision problems, chronic fatigue, and difficulties in speech and movement. In the UK, approximately 123,000 people are affected, with women representing three-quarters of cases, and around 43,000 experiencing the relapsing-active form of MS.

How the Drug Works
The medication is a monoclonal antibody that prevents immune cells from crossing the blood-brain barrier, reducing inflammation and relapse frequency. Administered every four weeks via injection or intravenous infusion, clinical trials showed significant reductions in disability progression and annual relapse rates.

Pregnancy Safety
This recommendation offers a safe treatment option for women planning pregnancy. Unlike other therapies often discontinued before conception due to fetal risks, this drug can be continued under careful monitoring.

Clinical Evidence
Studies revealed a 40% reduction in disability progression and over a 50% decrease in new brain lesions. Comparisons between the original and biosimilar formulations showed comparable safety and effectiveness, providing cost-effective treatment options.

Safety Monitoring
While the drug carries a rare risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) linked to the JCV virus, regular antibody testing is advised to ensure safe usage.

Dr. Siri Smith, Head of Policy at the UK Multiple Sclerosis Society, commented that this decision "represents a real breakthrough for women wishing to build a family without compromising their health."
