Cardiologists caution against assuming sugar-free soft drinks are a healthy alternative for weight management or blood sugar control. Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiology consultant, explained that regular intake of these drinks may pose unexpected health risks.

Recent studies indicate that sugar-free beverages can affect gut metabolism and alter how the liver handles fats, raising the risk of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease by nearly 60%. In contrast, traditional sugary drinks may pose a relatively lower risk of around 50%.

Dr. Yaranov emphasized that the label “sugar-free” does not guarantee health benefits, noting that artificial ingredients can negatively impact the body. He stressed that water remains the safest and healthiest choice for maintaining heart and liver health.
