Recent medical research has made strides in managing acute gout attacks, which cause severe pain and sudden joint swelling, especially in the big toe. A new clinical trial shows that an antibody-based drug targeting the inflammatory protein interleukin-1 beta can reduce attack severity and prevent flares before they start.

Clinical Trial Details

The trial was conducted in 41 medical centers across China with 162 patients suffering from active gouty arthritis, all recently starting uric acid-lowering therapy. Participants were divided into groups receiving different doses of the new drug (100 mg and 200 mg) under the skin, while a control group received standard treatment for 12 weeks.

Remarkable Results

Patients receiving 100 mg experienced a 93% reduction in attack rates compared to conventional therapy, while those receiving 200 mg reported no attacks throughout the study. The proportion of patients experiencing at least one flare was reduced by 20% compared to standard treatment.

Safety and Tolerability

Over 12 weeks, no serious side effects were reported. Low-level antibodies detected in some patients did not affect the drug’s efficacy, indicating suitability for long-term preventive use.

Significance of the New Therapy

Unlike traditional drugs that inhibit white blood cells, this treatment directly controls the inflammatory pathway, offering deeper and longer-lasting protection against gout attacks. It is especially beneficial for patients intolerant to or unresponsive to conventional medications.

Study Limitations

The trial included only Chinese men aged 39–42 and lasted 12 weeks, limiting global generalizability and long-term evaluation, which requires extended follow-up.

Expert Perspective

Dr. Yi Yun Yu, lead investigator from Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, emphasized that targeting interleukin-1 beta is a significant step in preventing acute attacks, potentially shifting gout management from reactive to preventive care. The study was published in ACR Open Rheumatology and is under further review to include broader populations.
