Plastic Cigarette Filters Pose Environmental Risks: WHO Conference Acts
The 11th session of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control concluded with key measures to reduce the environmental harm caused by plastic cigarette filters.
The 11th Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control concluded with a series of decisive measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact of plastic cigarette filters, which release harmful chemicals annually.
Around 160 parties participated in the conference to discuss global tobacco control strategies, including environmental protection, sustainable funding for tobacco reduction, and forward-looking measures to address the effects of tobacco and nicotine products.
The conference adopted a resolution calling for a complete ban on the use and sale of traditional and emerging tobacco and nicotine products within all UN premises, and emphasized strengthening legal accountability for the tobacco industry regarding environmental and health damages.
These decisions form part of a comprehensive plan to protect public health and reduce environmental damage, highlighting the need to curb nicotine addiction and prevent interference from the tobacco industry in health policies.
The conference also announced that the 12th session will be held in Yerevan, Armenia in 2027, to continue efforts in combating tobacco-related harm and environmental impact.
