Researchers Develop New Treatment for Aggressive Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
A team of US scientists has developed a new molecule to treat triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive type currently lacking effective therapies.
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University developed a new molecule called SU212 to target resistant cases of triple-negative breast cancer, which accounts for about 15% of all breast cancers.
How SU212 Works
In mouse models, SU212 binds to the enzyme Enolase 1 (ENO1), which regulates glucose levels in cells and is overexpressed in cancerous cells. The molecule triggers the enzyme's breakdown, suppressing tumor growth and spread, offering promising new avenues for treating this aggressive cancer type.
Future Applications
SU212 may also benefit other cancers involving ENO1, such as glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer. The next step is advancing the molecule to clinical trials in humans after obtaining necessary approvals.
