How It Happens
The condition is caused by a sudden surge of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, leading to temporary weakening of the heart muscle and abnormal enlargement of the left ventricle. The ventricle’s shape resembles a Japanese octopus trap called “Takotsubo,” hence the syndrome’s name.

The syndrome is most common among postmenopausal women, as hormonal changes increase heart sensitivity to stress. Emotional trauma like losing a loved one or extreme work pressure can act as triggers.
