Sometimes, people perceive colors that aren’t actually present, a phenomenon called “afterimages”, which occurs when staring at an object for a prolonged period and then seeing a scene in altered colors. A recent study has clarified the scientific reason behind this.

The research shows that the phenomenon results from a precise visual mechanism in the eye that maintains color constancy despite changing lighting conditions, whether under sunlight, shade, or artificial lighting. Scientists identified the source in the cone cells of the retina, which detect and process light.

Dr. Christoph Witzel, Professor of Psychology at the University of Southampton, explained that these false colors are not visual illusions or brain-generated effects but are direct reflections of photoreceptor adaptation, allowing the eye to maintain consistent color perception.

To verify the findings, researchers conducted experiments with 50 participants describing colors seen after staring at stimuli, while 10 others underwent 360 precise visual tests compared with computer simulations illustrating eye-brain interactions. The results confirmed that afterimages originate in the eye itself, not the brain, and are not caused by opposing colors as previously thought.

Question: Why do humans see colors that don’t exist in afterimages?
Answer: The primary cause is cone cell adaptation in the retina, which makes the eye perceive altered colors after staring at an object, rather than a brain-generated illusion.

These findings enhance understanding of how the eye processes light and color, showing its role in maintaining color perception even under varying lighting conditions.
