Study Reveals Link Between the Common Cold and Deadly Heart Diseases
A Danish study shows that RSV, a common respiratory virus, may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, especially in seniors and heart patients.
A recent Danish study has revealed a concerning connection between infection with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a major cause of colds and respiratory infections, and an increased risk of deadly heart diseases in adults.
Researchers followed over 17,000 adults aged 45 and older, including 8,747 who contracted RSV. Within one year, 665 of the infected individuals experienced cardiac complications, compared to only 257 of those uninfected. The study concluded that RSV increases the likelihood of heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure by 4.7% within the following year—a risk comparable to that posed by influenza.

RSV spreads easily through coughs and sneezes and can remain on surfaces for up to seven hours, making preventive measures essential, particularly during winter. Vaccines for seniors, pregnant women, and high-risk children (such as nirsevimab) help reduce severe respiratory and heart complications.
These findings highlight that RSV is not just a common cold virus but poses a dual threat to both the respiratory system and the heart, emphasizing the importance of vaccination for vulnerable populations.
