A recent international study conducted in China revealed a notable rise in gout incidence among people aged 15 to 39 from 1990 to 2021. The study, published in Joint Bone Spine, utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) covering 204 countries.

Study Findings

  • The prevalence of gout and years lived with disability increased by 66%, and incidence rates rose by 62%.

  • Individuals aged 15 to 39 accounted for approximately 14% of new gout cases globally in 2021.

  • Men aged 35-39 and residents of high-income countries were most affected, with North America having the highest rates.

  • Men tend to live longer with gout due to higher BMI, while women’s cases are often linked to kidney function issues.

  • Although total cases are expected to rise due to population growth, individual risk rates per person may decrease.

What is Gout?

Gout is a common form of arthritis characterized by sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness, and sensitivity in the joints, often in the big toe. It occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joint due to elevated uric acid levels in the blood during purine breakdown.

Risk Factors

Key risk factors for gout include:

  • Diet: foods high in purines such as red meat and certain seafood.

  • Excess weight: increases uric acid production and hampers renal clearance.

  • Chronic conditions: untreated high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, heart, and kidney disease.

  • Medications and family history.

Medical Advice

Seek prompt medical attention if fever, warmth, or joint inflammation occurs, as it may indicate infection. Anti-inflammatory medications can help manage gout attacks and prevent complications.

Early lifestyle interventions, weight management, and control of chronic conditions can reduce the impact of gout on young adults and limit long-term complications.
